TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) sends gentle electrical pulses through self-adhesive pads placed on the skin near the area of discomfort. It is a drug-free option that can be used at home, at work or while you sleep. Which device suits you?

• Everyday aches and general use: the Perfect TENS is our simplest dual-channel unit — choose a programme, turn up the intensity, done. A sensible first machine for back, neck, shoulder and joint discomfort.
• Period pain: the Ova 3 is light enough to clip inside a waistband and wear through the day, and the Ova Therma heat belt adds warmth over the same area.
• Migraine: Mynd is worn across the forehead and runs a single preset programme, so there is nothing to adjust once an episode has started.
• Training and recovery: Unifit and Unipro combine TENS with EMS muscle stimulation, for people training regularly or working through a programme set by a physiotherapist.

Don't forget the pads. Every TENS unit needs electrodes and they are consumables — when pads stop sticking, or you find yourself turning the intensity higher than usual, replace them.
